Taiwan DYE builds its design practice around betel-nut seed dyeing. Founded in 2010 by Yi-Fan Wang, a Taipei native and National Taiwan University graduate, the brand moved from Taipei to Pingtung in 2021 and began systematic colour experiments with betel nuts. After two years of research, it released betel-nut dyed design goods in 2023. Dried betel fruits are struck open to extract the seeds, which can be ground into powder for pigment extraction; different fermentation conditions produce different colour effects. Its range includes socks, tote bags, canvas and leather bags, fabric pieces and embroidery hoops, with shades including pale pink, rose, wine red, deep purple, beige and brown.
