Taiwan DYE builds its identity around betel-nut-seed dyeing, developed after founder Yi-Fan Wang moved from Taipei to Pingtung in 2021. Founded in 2010, the brand spent two years studying betel nut seeds in the Pingtung plain before releasing its first related design products in 2023. The process begins with dried betel fruits: the seeds are removed by hammering, ground into powder, and extracted for pigment, then used in boiling, dyeing, and drying. Seeds at different fermentation stages produce distinct shades, including pale pink, rose, ochre red, wine red, deep purple, milk tea, beige, and earth brown. These colours appear on socks, tote bags, canvas and leather bags, fabric, and embroidery frames. The team also experiments with turmeric, madder, gallnut, and indigo, turning local Pingtung plant resources into practical objects with a tactile, soft, understated character.
