Founded in Tainan in 2013, Kyoto Gamakuchi builds its bag designs around the clasp purse remembered from the founder’s grandmother’s drawer, where coins for an afternoon ice pop were once kept. The brand reworks Japanese kimono textiles and obi fabric into everyday accessories, using Nishijin-ori, obi cloth, Taiwanese textiles, and woven mesh associated with traditional Taiwanese market bags. Japanese artisan-made obi materials and purse frames are paired with the brand’s own designs. Its range includes coin purses, evening bags, compact carry bags, creative handbags, and small zip pouches. Some styles incorporate handwoven rush grass, while a parent-and-child structure separates keys, seals, phones, and folding fans; a three-dimensional wide-base pattern creates additional interior room. Because each obi has its own colours and motifs, the resulting bags vary in appearance and quantity, reflecting the brand’s idea of a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
