Chaiwood 柴屋

Founded in Taichung in 2015, Chaiwood builds furniture around traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, pairing wooden structures with hand-stitched leather details. Its work spans furniture, home objects, installation art, and craft pieces, including benches, long dining tables, round dining tables, and its classic household stool. Wood and leather are treated as distinct natural materials: the wood retains its grain and plant-based fibre character, while the leather shows animal-fibre texture and develops visible changes through use. Brass has been added in recent pieces to introduce a reflective metal accent. Furniture is finished with OLI-NATUR wood oil, preserving the wood’s original texture, a restrained sheen, and a warm, natural surface feel.
